Carlo Alberto, the King of Sardinia, is the father of the King of Italy. He defeated the Austrians during the battle at Custoza. While in that battle, his life was saved by Viscount Vittorio Martini, who was a young army officer way back then. In honor of Vittorio's heroism, Carlo Alberto gave the viscount a medal with a carved "mark of benediction" from him.
